Right from the opening muted guitar picking, Eddie George’s debut single “Magic” is a fantastic opening statement from the young singer-songwriter. The song’s blend of pop, roots rock and even country pull together perfectly with George’s clever lyrics and delicate falsetto to create a real sense of build as the song grows. By the time you reach the chanted bridge where George feels “magic running through his bones”, you’ve fallen in love with the track’s syncopated drums, ringing piano and the ever-incessant guitar figure, making you want to hit play for another listen. In just over 3 minutes, George manages to take his listeners on a real journey, showing a real depth and maturity to his writing that one would expect from a seasoned musician with several albums under their belt, let alone their debut release. George’s cited influences of Van Morrison and Nizlopi definitely shine through in Magic, but he also manages to firmly imprint his own unique style on the song, setting himself up well for future releases. For a first single, this song really does have a little bit of “magic”.
